Makueni County

Makueni County is located in the former Eastern Province of Kenya. Its capital is in Wote Town which is also the largest town in the county.

Population and Administration

Makueni County has a population of around 987,653 people according to Kenya’s 2019 Housing and Population Census results. The County is divided into six constituencies and thirty electoral wards.

The County Government of Makueni is led by H.E Governor Kivutha Kibwana and has Hon. Senator Mutula Kilonzo serving as its Senator.

Economic Practises

Agriculture is the main economic activity practised in the region. Majority of the population depend on agriculture and livestock rearing for their livelihood. Cotton and fruit production are also practised in the county.

Main crops grown in the region include maize, sorghum and green grams. Mangoes and oranges are among the fruits grown in the county. Horticulture and dairy farming is practised in the hilly and cooler regions of the county especially in Kilungu and Mbooni west Sub Counties.
