About Nairobi County
Nairobi City County, Is the capital and Largest City in Kenya. The name “Nairobi” originated from a Maasai phrase, “Enkare Nyrobi” which means a place with cool waters. The City Originated in the late 1890s as a colonial railway settlement. The city was first incorporated in 1900 as the Township of Nairobi. The regulations governing it were published on the 16th April 1900 under the powers vested in Sir Arthur Hardinge, H M Commissioner at Zanzibar by Article 45 of the East Africa Order-in-Council.
Following the promulgation of the new Kenyan Constitution in 2010, Nairobi became a County with Dr. Evans Kidero becoming its first Governor after the 2013 Kenyan General Elections. H.E. Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko is the Current Governor of the County. However, following his recent arrest due to corruption charges, the county is left without an active governor.
Nairobi County has 11 Constituencies, namely: Westlands, Dagoretti, Kasarani, Langata, Starehe, Kamukunji, Embakasi,Kibra, Mathare, Njiru and Makadara. Nairobi is the most populous city in East Africa, with a population of around 4,397,073 people( Source: Kenyan Census:2019)
Nairobi County serves as the headquarters for the National Government thus making it a key governmental Center in East Africa. The National Assembly and The Senate are both situated in the County. Other Key governmental institutions such as The Supreme Court and The National Police Service Headquaters among others are located in the County.
Nairobi is the country’s main Industrial Centre. Many companies have been set up in the county. A number of primary products are routed through Nairobi before being exported via Mombasa. Nairobi also plays an important role in the community of eastern African states; it is the headquarters of important regional railways, harbors, and airways corporations.
The County is home to many key educational Institutions including the University of Nairobi, Multimedia University of Kenya, Kenyatta University, Strathmore University and the Technical University of Kenya Among others.
Nairobi City has also been naturally endowed with beautiful scenery which makes it a most visited tourist destination in the country. It has been described as the Safari Capital of the Country.
