Siaya County is one of the counties located in the Nyanza region of Kenya. It has its capital in Siaya Town. Bondo town is however the largest in the county. It borders with Busia, Kakamega, Vihiga and Kisumu Counties. The County also borders with Lake Victoria.
Population and Administration
Siaya County has a population of around 993,183 people according to Kenya’s 2019 Housing and population results, with members from the Luo tribe being majority of the population. The County is divided into six subcounties namely: Siaya, Gem, Ugenya, Ugunja, Bondo and Rarieda.
The County Government is led by H.E Governor Cornel Rasanga Amoth who is currently serving his second termafter winning both the 2013 and 2017 Siaya gubernatorial elections.
Agriculture, tourism and farming are the main economic activities practised in the county. Subsistence farming, livestock keeping and rice farming are the main agricultural activites practised in the county.
Fishing activities are carried out mainly on the shores of Lake Victoria. The County has several tourist attractions including the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Museum, Yala Swamp and Wetlands, Lake Kanyaboli and Lake Victoria.
The County is home to Kenya’s youngest Deputy President candidate, Ronald Osumba who vied in the 2017 Kenyan Presidential elections. Kenya’s Second Prime Minister, Hon.Raila Odinga also hails from the County.
